As the weather swings in a warmer direction it seems so does our mood. Almost as if our minds and bodies are in tune with the planet we live on or something. We feel a bit brighter than we did in January when the sky is gray 18 hours a day. We start to look forward to the grind a bit more. For some reason, things just start looking up. As our calendars fill up and our ambitions grow it is easy to pride ourselves on our busyness. So we want to offer a reminder of some practices you can implement to prioritize rest when you need it!
1. Know your boundaries
It is important for everyone to identify their limits and define boundaries for themselves to maintain a balanced disposition. For some of us it can be how long in the day we can go without having lunch. For others it may be how many weekends we can work in row with out taking one off. You keep KPIs for your business, so why wouldn’t you for yourself? Pay attention to these limits to give yourself an edge when times are busier than usual or to just stay balanced in your daily life.
2. Create a cadence
When those boundaries have been identified, create a cadence for yourself to manage your rest. Change things in your daily routine that allow your to prioritize the time you get to unwind. This could be as simple as turning on screen time on your phone after a certain hour. Limiting your access to the device and allowing your to be present where you are. It could also be more complicated like pinpointing things in your day that you can either add or take away to benefit your times of rest. It will look different for everyone, you just want to make sure it something that’s manageable for your in the long run.
3. Tell a friend
Believe it or not, most of us struggle with these things. Especially as entrepreneurs and leaders who often pride ourselves on being booked and busy! Phone a friend and tell them your struggles, not just for venting but for accountability in your growth. Encourage one another to be mindful of your limits. Call out one another when it is needed but most importantly offer a helping hand. The more intentional we are about the time we spend with one another, and the transparency in which we communicate our needs, the better we can support one another and the stronger we’ll be as individuals and a community.
